INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: Traveling to, studying (& working) in Canada. Find info & resources here Read more
The program is designed to prepare students for academic success in college and university and to provide them the skills to communicate within English environments. Many international students first enter the English Certificate Program before going on to the High School or University Transfer Program.
Courses offered range in levels from beginner to university preparation. Students are required to take writing and reading in each level.
At the Intermediate and Advanced levels, students have four electives from which they can choose two. These electives integrate all four skills (writing, reading, listening, and speaking) and focus on specific topics to allow students to use the skills they are learning.
In beginner, students will be exposed to the fundamentals of English that create the framework for future learning.
Intermediate students will build upon the framework they created in beginner to further develop the skills necessary for success in and outside of the English classroom. Reading comprehension and grammatically correct writing will also be stressed. Intermediate students may choose from the following electives:
At the advanced level, students are preparing for the transition to secondary level courses in an English language environment. Emphasis is placed upon clear and fluent communication and on writing essays at the secondary level. Advanced students may choose from the following electives:
The university preparation courses focus on the skills that students will require for academic success within the post-secondary atmosphere.
The Coquitlam College English Proficiency Test will determine which skill level is best for you.
