B.C. is facing a toxic drug crisis due to an unregulated and increasingly dangerous drug supply. Since 2016, over 15,000 lives have been lost. Substances—whether legal or illegal—can affect your mental, emotional, and physical health. If you or someone you know uses drugs, it’s important to know the risks and learn ways to stay safer.
Be aware: Fentanyl, a powerful and toxic opioid, has been found in a variety of unregulated drugs—including cocaine, MDMA, counterfeit pills, and in rare cases, cannabis. Because fentanyl is hard to detect and extremely potent, even small amounts can be life-threatening.

Learn how to reduce the risks of opioid poisoning through harm reduction tools like naloxone. Support and free kits are available on campus to help keep you and others safe.
Start low and go slow.
Begin with a small amount and, if possible, use in the presence of someone you trust.
Stay informed.
Receive local toxic drug alerts by texting JOIN to 253787.
Use the Lifeguard Connect App.
Available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. This app connects to emergency services if someone becomes unresponsive.
Carry naloxone and get trained.
Naloxone can reverse opioid overdoses. Students and staff at Coquitlam College can get a free naloxone kit and sign up for training with our on-site nurse, Susan Patterson, located in the First Aid Room.
Check your substances.

Coquitlam College is a smoke-free campus, which means smoking and vaping of cannabis are not allowed anywhere on campus grounds. This policy helps create a safe and healthy environment for all students and staff.
BC Laws on Cannabis Use:
You must be 19 years or older to buy, use, or grow recreational cannabis.
Cannabis can only be legally purchased from government-run stores, licensed private retailers, or the official online BC store.
Adults can carry up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or its equivalent) in public.
Many public areas—including parks, bus stops, and public buildings—prohibit smoking or vaping cannabis.
We ask everyone to respect these laws and campus rules to maintain a positive and respectful learning environment.

BC Laws on Alcohol Use:
You must be 19 years or older to purchase or consume alcohol in British Columbia.
Alcohol can only be legally purchased from licensed retailers or government liquor stores.
It is illegal to consume alcohol in public spaces, such as parks, sidewalks, and transit areas.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offense with strict penalties.
