Associate of Arts degree is a two-year program that requires 60 credits (20 courses) to complete. Upon completion of the Associate of Arts degree, you may either transfer to a 4-year degree program at another post-secondary university or explore your career opportunities.
University Transfer Program allows students to explore a variety of courses based on their own interests at the first- and second- year university level, which students are eligible to transfer towards a desired Bachelor’s Degree program at another post-secondary institution.
The minimum requirements for completion of an Associate of Arts degree are 20 required courses as listed in the AA degree checklist and the cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
An Associate of Arts (AA) degree checklist is a worksheet designed to help students track their progress towards graduation. It allows students to easily see which courses they have taken or are currently enrolled in that fulfill the specific area requirements for the AA degree, which typically includes the successful completion of 20 courses.
For more detailed guidance, students can schedule an appointment with an Academic Advisor.
Overall GPA is calculated by adding all of the GPA values of courses the student has passed and dividing the total value by the total number of courses. GPA values can be found on the far right column of the transcript.
Example (as seen on a transcript):
COURSE |
LG |
CR |
GPA |
ENGL 101 | C+ | 3.0 | 2.33 |
CMNS 110 | B- | 3.0 | 2.67 |
ECON 102 | B | 3.0 | 3.0 |
ANTH 100 | C- | 3.0 | 1.67 |
MATH 197 | C+ | 3.0 | 2.33 |
FILM 101 | C | 3.0 | 2.0 |
Total GPA: 2.33 + 2.67 + 3.0 + 1.67 + 2.33 + 2.0
= 14 / 6 courses
= 2.33
If one or more of your courses is a 4-credit course (ex. MATH 190, BIOL or CHEM lab), students can use the GPA Calculator on the website: GPA Calculator – Coquitlam College
Semester GPA: based on courses you completed in that particular semester. For example, if you took 3 courses and received the following grades: C, C+, B; your semester GPA would be 2.33, or a C+ average. This determines a student’s academic standing for the semester.
Cumulative GPA: cumulative GPA* is the total GPA for all semesters, and is based on every course you have attempted at Coquitlam College, pass or fail.
*Note: The cumulative GPA used to determine if you graduate differs from the unofficial transcript cumulative GPA as the graduating GPA only uses the courses you have taken and passed. If you have not failed any courses, then your cumulative GPA accurately represents your graduating GPA.
In terms of the Cumulative GPA that appears in your transcript, yes, a failed course will impact your GPA. However, a failed course does not impact the program GPA (which needs to be 2.0 or above upon completing all AA course requirements) on your Associate of Arts Checklist, as only courses you have passed can be included in your Checklist.
You will be notified via email if you are on academic warning/probation, and when you are moved back into good academic standing.
If you are on Academic Warning it means that your GPA has fallen below the minimum standard the College has set.
In order to be moved back to Good Academic Standing, you must achieve a semester GPA of 2.0 average (or C letter grade, or 60%) in the following semester.
If you fail to achieve that 2.0 in the following semester, you are moved to Academic Probation. Please note that achieving a 2.0 is the only way to move into Good academic standing, but attendance and overall improvement are also important considerations when on Academic Probation if you are unable to meet the 2.0 GPA threshold.
Some first steps when considering transferring to a university are as follows:
