Sociology enables us to better understand ourselves and the social forces influencing our lives. The way we think, behave, feel and our sense of identity, are socially produced. Through the study of sociology we may (1) increase our understanding of ourselves and our society by applying concepts that describe and explain our social environment and how they influence our lives; (2)open our minds, and find inspiration to question common assumptions which may encourage us to consider alternatives; (3) discover that society is constantly changing, being of diverse historical and contemporary processes; and (4) with the knowledge and abilities to study societies from a critical and informed position, be better prepared for the future.
