This course introduces students to the subject of archaeology, from its origins as a field of study up to the modern practice in both academic and private spheres. A focus will be placed on the development of archaeology as a discipline, how archaeology informs our understanding of the past, the process that leads archaeologists to choose their sites and excavate them, the relationships we can discover through material culture, and how culture is managed today. Drawing on information from sites around the world, students will gain the opportunity to compare and contrast the physical remains of a diverse assortment of global societies, from throughout the human past, as well as the various archaeological methods and practices employed today.
