------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transfering files between a college network folder and a college C:\temp folder ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **************************************************** To transfer a file from C:\temp to a network folder: **************************************************** IMPORTANT: you cannot use the "File -> Save As" menu options of any application (Notepad, Word etc) to transfer files from the local C:\temp folder to any network folder. Follow these instructions: From the Start menu on your Windows desktop, If you have a shortcut to CSCI on Pineapple on your desktop, double click on it, then double click on the folders: Anne Dawson CSCI120A (substitute your own course code: CSCI165A etc) Week01 (or the folder for the current week, Week02, Week03 etc) Using File Explorer, drag your file from the C:\temp folder to the destination network folder (usually the folder for the current week: Week01, Week02, Week03 etc) ------------------------------------------------------------- If there is no shortcut to CSCI on Pineapple on your desktop, go to : My Network Places Entire Network Microsoft Windows Network Coqcollege Pineapple CSCI Anne Dawson CSCI120A (substitute your own course code: CSCI165A etc) Week01 (or the folder for the current week, Week02, Week03 etc) Drag your file from the C:\temp folder to the destination network folder ------------------------------------------------------------- In the destination folder, make sure the file has a size greater than 0 bytes by selecting "Details" from the "View" menu when in File Explorer... ------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT: you cannot use the "File -> Save As" menu options of any application (Notepad, Word etc) to transfer files from the local C:\temp folder to any network folder. It will simply save the file name to the destination network folder, but the file will be empty (0 bytes in size). If your file shows 0 bytes size, rename your file on C:\temp, and transfer the file to the network by using the correct method described below... The only way you can safely save to the network is by closing the application (Notepad, Word etc) after saving the file to C:\temp, then using File Explorer, drag the file from C:\temp to the network destination folder. ------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE NOTE: Once saved in the destination network folder, students only have permissions to list the files in the folder, but do not have permission to read (open) them. ************************************************************************************************************* **************************************************** To transfer a file from a network folder to C:\temp **************************************************** Go to the network folder (see instructions above). Copy the required files. Go to the C:\temp folder. Paste the files.
