6 May 2006 I downloaded a trial version of Alcohol 120% to burn my iso CDs.
All burned successfully. Previous attempts to burn iso CDs using different software failed.
See here for details.
6 May 2006 - Installing Fedora Core 5 (FC5)on my Dell Dimension 3100
--------------------------------------------------------------------
After doing the media check on my 6 CDs and all passing, I inserted disk 1 to start the installation.
You are first asked for language of choice, then the option to do a fresh install,
or upgrade a previous version. My machine had Fedora Core 3 installed,
but I selected the first option (Install Fedora Core) rather than select
to Upgrade an existing installation - because I wanted a full clean install of FC5.
Following the instructions here:
FC5 Installation Notes
On the partitioning screen, I selected:
"Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout"
for a fresh install over any existing Linux partitions.I have only this drive:sda 152586 MB ATA
Leave "eth0" and hostname "automatically via DHCP" on the network configuration page. Click "Next".
Click on the map for your location on the "time zone selection page. Click "Next".
Enter your preferred root password on the set root password page. Click "Next".
You will see a message "Retrieving installation information...".
On the package installation defaults page I selected:
Office Productivity, Software Development and Web Server,
and to Customize now.
You will have an opportunity after installation for further customization
of the software packages. Click "Next".
If you selected "Customize now" in the previous step you will be presented with a dialog page
in which you may select software groups, sub-groups, and individual packages by ticking the
appropriate check boxes. Be sure to click the "Optional packages" button for each group
to view the individual package selection detail pages. You may now select all the software
for your installation. (Tip: You can select all packages in any group by right clicking on
that group and selecting "Select all optional packages".)
I selected all optional packages of all groups in each of the six catagories:
Desktop Environments, Applications, Development, Servers, Base System, Languages.
Click "Next".
You will see a message "Checking dependencies in packages selected for installation...".
After this message, you are informed that there will be an installation log here
after rebooting the installed system:
/root/install.log
and a kickstart file containing the installation options selected can be found here:
/root/anaconda-ks-cfg
Click "Next". You will see messages "Formatting / file system...",
"Formatting /boot file system...", Transferring install image to hard drive...",
"Starting install process. This may take several minutes...", and
"Preparing transaction with installation source".
The initial install process will now begin, and you will see a progress bar fill
in as the installation progresses.
On my machine total installation time is reported as 35 minutes,
although even as minutes progress, the remaining time still reports 35 minutes,
but you can see the currently installing feature name is reported and
the progression bar moving to the right.
After about 5 minutes I was requested for disk 2 insertion.
The installation process completed after about 1 hour.
On reboot, there are a few more setup procedures to complete.
After Fedora reboots click "Forward" on the "Welcome" page.
Click the appropriate radio button to agree to the license agreement and Click "Forward".
Firewall
On the "Firewall" page select the appropriate options for you system.
You should always enable the firewall for security reasons.
You can open appropriate ports depending upon your plans for your installation.
For example, if you plan to set up a web server tick the check box for "WWW (HTTP)"
scroll down to see this option.. You will be able to change these setting later
after your initial installation with the "system-config-securitylevel" command.
I enabled the firewall and seven all trusted services. Click "Forward". Click "Yes".
SELinux
On the "SELinux" page leave the default as "Enforcing" for security reasons.
You will be able to modify your SELinux policy later after your initial
installation if you wish. Click "Forward".
Date and Time
If you are already connected to an "always on" LAN or broadband connection
click on the "Network Time Protocol" tab on the "Date and Time" page and
tick the "Enable Network Time Protocol" check box.
Click "Forward". You will see a message "Contacting NTP Server. Please wait...".
Display
FC5 detected my monitor (Dell E176FP) and onboard Intel Graphics Controller,
I selected Resolution 1024x768 and Millions of colors.
System User
On the "System User" page choose a user name
(in lower case, not "root"), a full name (any case),
and a password for that default user.
e.g. adawson, Anne Dawson, *******, *******
I didn't set the Use Network Login.
Click "Forward".
Sound Card
Could not hear the sound test. I swapped the speakers - twice - but still no sound.
It reports:
Vendor: Intel
Model: Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
Modile: snd-hda-intel
Default PCM device: STAC92xx Analog[STAC92xx Analog] (no others listed)
When I clicked No for no sound it reported Error:
Automatic detection of the sound card did not work.
Audio will not be available on the system.
You can inspect /root/scsound.log and file a new bug at
http://bugzilla.redhat.com
Click next/finish to enter Fedora Core 5.
My sound problem isn't uncommon:

I guess its a bug in the newest kernel that effects Intel cards

I had the same problem with sound (appeared to be fine, but no output).
Upgrading to the latest ALSA development version fixed it.

Redid Soundcard Detection, changed settings in ALSA Mixer and KMix, all to no avail.
Note Kmix is not available in a Gnome session, only KDE session. Change sessions at login.
I updated all packages to see if this would help, then rebooted. Still no sound.
I changed from ALSA to OSS sound system using KDE Sound System - Control Center : Still no sound, but
I did notice the boot message on starting up:
"Can't read CTR while initializing i8042."
With respect to this, I found this:
http://lkml.org/lkml/2004/9/19/104
i8042 is the keyboard/mouse port - so usually the above message accompanies
no keyboard response.
Regarding the 'no sound' problem on Fedora Core 5 on my Dell Dimension 3100 -
in April 2006 I installed Fedora Core 3 on an older machine: Dell Dimension XPS T series,
PIII at 700HZ, Turtle Beach Montego II A3D 320V sound card, and had no problems with sound.
When I did a fresh install of Fedora Core 5 on the same PIII machine (27 Jan 07),
again there was no problem with sound. I'm giving this PIII Linux machine to Coquitlam College
on permanent loan.
